Medical tourism on Hainan: how treatment in the Boao Lecheng zone works
Hainan is called “China's Hawaii” — and at the same time it hosts a special medical zone. We look at how medical tourism on the island works and how to combine treatment with a holiday by the sea.

Medical tourism long stopped being about “flying over to the dentist.” More and more, people travel for what isn't yet available at home — and Hainan Island turns out to be a rare combination: a tropical resort and a special medical zone in one place.
Calmly: why Hainan, how the Boao Lecheng zone works, and how to combine treatment with a holiday without turning the trip into chaos.
Why Hainan specifically
Hainan is a resort island in southern China with a mild climate and the sea year-round. But people come not only for the beaches: here, in the Boao Lecheng pilot zone, technologies not yet available in most markets are used lawfully.
The calm setting and climate aren't a bonus but part of recovery: between clinic visits you stay at a resort hotel by the sea, not counting days in a ward.
What the Boao Lecheng zone is
It's the only medical zone of its kind in China, granted special regulatory powers by a State Council decision. Its key privilege is lawful early access to drugs and cellular technologies approved in the US, EU or Japan, without waiting for full registration across China.
More on the mechanism in “Boao Lecheng: what this zone is”.
How to combine treatment and a holiday
The diagnostic and cellular-medicine programmes here are outpatient: hospitalisation is usually not needed. A typical diagnostic format is “4 days / 3 nights” with accommodation, meals and transfers; the active part of the visit is short, the rest of the time is yours.
Many combine a check-up or therapy with a holiday: diagnostics can even be done as a couple, in a single visit.
Visa and logistics
Hainan is China's visa-free zone: citizens of 59 countries can stay for up to 30 days without a visa (your coordinator confirms the rules for your passport in advance). Sanya International Airport (SYX) takes direct flights and convenient connections.
The coordinator meets you at arrivals — from there everything runs to schedule: transfer, check-in, clinic. No taxis, no Chinese-language navigation.
Where to start
Start with a short conversation: describe your situation and goal, hand over your existing records. The coordinator will advise which documents are needed and how the trip is arranged. The first step on site is always accurate diagnostics.
