In oncology, everything starts with an accurate diagnosis
A diagnosis is not just 'there is a tumour', but which type, subtype, stage and molecular profile. Treatment depends directly on this. An independent review and a re-reading of the pathology sometimes refine the diagnosis — and with it, the whole plan.
- Pathology re-review — a second pathologist's opinion on your slides. The tumour type determines all further treatment, so its accuracy is critical.
- Molecular profiling (NGS) — shows which mutations drive the tumour and what 'targets' it has for precision therapy.
- Liquid biopsy — analysis of tumour DNA from blood, where applicable.

Access to modern medicines
Early-window medicines — sooner than at home
Boao Lecheng is the only international medical zone in China where, by decision of the State Council, clinics may use overseas medicines and technologies already approved abroad but not yet registered in the rest of China — when they meet an urgent, unmet medical need.
For an oncology patient this means access to modern targeted and immune medicines may open here sooner than at home. The mechanism works — some of the medicines used in the zone have, on the strength of the data collected, already received nationwide approval in China.

Today treatment is increasingly precise — matched to a particular tumour in a particular person. Some of the newest medicines may be available in the zone sooner, by indication.
Immunotherapy (PD-1 / PD-L1)
Checkpoint inhibitors 'release the brakes' on your own immune system so it recognises the tumour. An approved modern standard that has transformed oncology over the past decade.

Immune and cellular methods
Honestly: what is proven, and what is still being studied
The immune system can recognise and destroy altered cells — immuno-oncology is built on this. Here it is important to be honest about what is approved and what is still developing.
Approved, by strict indication
- CAR-T therapy — a breakthrough for certain blood cancers (some leukaemias, lymphomas, multiple myeloma). The patient's own T-cells are reprogrammed against the tumour. This is an approved treatment — by strict indication, in specialised centres.
Developing, by indication, as a complement
- NK cells ('natural killers') — part of innate immunity: they react to threats first. Methods based on them (including CAR-NK) are being studied as a way to support anti-tumour immunity. More — on NK therapy.
- Dendritic cells (DC) and DC-CIK — methods that 'train' immune cells to recognise tumour cells. Used by indication as a complement; the evidence base continues to build.
Plainly: cellular methods (other than approved ones such as CAR-T by their own indications) are a complement to the main treatment, decided by oncologists, with no guarantee of outcome. Where and who
The oncology centre and a board of physicians
Diagnostics, a second opinion and treatment are delivered by the oncology centre of Boao Worldlight Hospital (博鳌未来医院) — one of the cluster's specialist units.
- A tumour board (MDT) — decisions on serious diagnoses are made by a team — oncologist, surgeon, radiation oncologist, radiologist and pathologist together, not one doctor. This reduces the risk of error and a one-sided plan.
- Modern diagnostics and local methods — including brachytherapy — placing radioactive I-125 'seeds' directly into the tumour, by indication.
- World-class equipment — modern imaging and an in-house pathology laboratory.
We are an independent coordinator: we connect you with this centre and handle paperwork, interpreting and the whole journey. Medical care is delivered by the centre's physicians.
